WIC and Shutdown: Where to get baby food and formula
UPDATE: SHUTDOWN OVER! PAGE EDITS TO COME.
While the US government is shut down, the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Food and Nutrition program will not be receiving its regular federal funding. The National WIC Association is currently reporting that the program has sufficient emergency funds to remain open through the month of October, but some states' WIC services have been compromised (as of Oct 9, North Carolina stopped issuing new vouchers). Funding beyond this month remains uncertain, some state WIC offices have closed and reopened, information is changing daily, and families are getting lost in the shuffle.
Where do families go if and when their local WIC office runs out of funding? Because WIC generally provides infant formula and baby food, many community food programs do not regularly stock these items, leaving the 9 million Americans enrolled in WIC with few local resources to help meet this crucial daily need. In order to help WIC families, and the many others who were already struggling to feed their children without WIC, feministhulk.net will host a list of local formula and baby food resources and donation drives.
If you need formula or baby food, or would like to donate, please consult the list below for resources in your region. This list will be updated as more info comes in. Please check with your local WIC office first. I will include both information on WIC availability as well as alternative resources and local donation drives wherever possible.
If you have a resource to add to this list, please send the organization name, address, web/phone contact, and operation hours to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include as much info on donation and pickup procedures as possible.
Disclaimer: I am not a WIC representative, nor am I an official contact person for any of the resources listed below. If you have an update for an entry, or believe one of these resources was added in error, please email email@example.com.
What about breastfeeding families?: WIC provides important breastfeeding support services that are also affected by the government shutdown. If you know of local resources for lactation counseling for WIC families, please email this info as well. Find a lactation consultant and breastfeeding support in your area. Make sure to check out La Leche League and Human Milk 4 Human Babies.
This list is still under (frantic, continuous) construction. Send info if you have resources to add or corrections to make!
